Unfortunately, most of us aren’t confident that are daily nutrition needs are met by our diets. This is the main reason why many people resort to a multivitamin that- hopefully- fills the gap between what our bodies take in each day through our diet and what our bodies ideally need to operate at optimum health.
In general, there are only benefits to taking a multivitamin each day, and the worst that can happen to one who is taking a multivitamin is that he or she will be getting a bit too much of certain nutrients. This simply means that you’re body will get rid of the excess vitamin and mineral quantities through the urine.
Positives and Negatives of Multivitamins
Multivitamins are particularly beneficial in those who are not getting enough nutrients through their diets. Of course, the best way to take in vitamins and minerals is through eating natural, whole foods. In addition to providing you with vitamins and minerals, whole foods also tend to offer many other healthy substances, such as antioxidants. Whole foods contain purer, more natural forms of the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need, and our bodies tend to recognize the natural form of vitamins more easily as opposed to the synthetic forms that are produced in laboratories and used in multivitamin supplements.
However, it can’t be denied that multivitamins offer a certain convenience that cannot be enjoyed by those who work to create a diet that includes all necessary nutrients. Unfortunately, it’s just not possible for many of us to sit down to three healthy, complete meals each day. This means that multivitamins are necessary for some of us for maintaining ultimum health.
So which supplement should one choose?
It’s not easy to judge between the many products out there on the shelves. The truth is that the production of multivitamins is not very well regulated by the government, and some of the products out there may offer little or no assistance.
That’s why it’s important to do some research and find the best product. If possible, one should try to find a “whole foods vitamin” that actually offers synthetically produced nutrients that are combined with yeast, which gives the supplement some aspects of a whole food. Two possible products like this are Garden of Life and Megafood.
Overall, research on the long term effects of taking a multivitamin has not shown any definitive proof that they drastically improve the health of those who take them. However, some health professional have argued that multivitamins can assist people in sticking with diets and dealing with energy shortages or cognitive functioning issues.
Yet taking a multivitamin is unlikely to result in any negative health effects and is recommended for those who may not be getting enough of certain nutrients because of culinary preferences or diet issues. The most important thing to remember is not to assume that you don’t need to incorporate fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods into your diet simply because you are taking a multivitamin.
